I was honoured to be invited to an event celebrating Women's Day with the Langata women's prison. What struck me the most about this was that it didn't matter what your status in the outside world was; everyone got together, danced and sang, and celebrated this beautiful day as women alongside one another.
The Langata women performed dances, sang for us, and spoken words; it was incredible to see the talent these women possessed, and it was unfortunate that the rest of the world did not get to see it. The majority of the women in the prison became involved in situations they were unaware of. The most heartbreaking thing for me was learning that they have very limited contact with their family, that mothers with children over the age of four would have to leave their child and lose contact with their children. Despite everything they had faced in their lives, they maintained such a positive attitude toward life; they were filled with joy and happenings, and their ability to remain so strong truly inspired me.
Following the event, I was given a tour of the prison, and the best thing I saw was the sewing room, where they are making PadMad kits, reusable sanitary pads that will help girls.
This was a day when women all over the world came together to stand up for women's rights. We are the foundation of society, and we all play an important role in the world. I am so proud to be a woman because it is the greatest gift. This day was set aside to be inspired by one another and to encourage one another because we are stronger when we stand together.
