I fell in love with makeup after discovering my passion for art, and I began teaching myself how to do makeup around the sixth grade. I was captivated by the fact that I could use my own face as a canvas. To me, makeup has no rules; you can wear it however you want to express yourself. I've done looks that didn't define the beauty standards of society. But none of that mattered to me.
When I was younger and into makeup, I recall that no brand represented me as a black hijabi woman, so I had never seen beauty models who looked like me, which always made me question was beautiful to the rest of the world?
I realized that people used makeup to cover up their insecurities, rather than to make a woman feel beautiful in her own skin. Society even made make-up a product that women used to attract the attention of others in order for them to qualify as beautiful or worthy. I didn't like the definition of what makeup became; to myself, makeup was a way to express yourself, to feel empowered, to feel beautiful without feeling the need to change who you are, to take control of your own life without worrying about what other people thought. To me, it didn't matter if there were rules about when to wear makeup or not; I did it whenever I felt like it; I could come to school one day all dolled up and the next day looking very simple with no makeup. In either case, I felt beautiful and confident.
This is how I developed the inspiration to start my own makeup brand, a makeup brand that makes you feel beautiful and empowered, a makeup brand that has no rules about how to wear your makeup to be considered beautiful. A brand that embodies diversity.
When I created K Amani beauty, I wanted it paired with its own organization, K Amani Organization. If my beauty brand can help so many women around the world feel beautiful and confident. I wanted Organization that focused on issues that women experience. I knew I couldn't just stop at making women feel beautiful on the outside; I had to help them in every way possible. With the K Amani beauty and Organization mission, I will be able to impact women all over the world in a variety of ways.
