The qualities that makes us different from each other are the things that make life magical. If we can accept our uniqueness, we will be able to achieve our goals in life.

There will be many situations in life where you will feel different from everybody else. Maybe it will be because you think that you don’t fit in or you view things from another perspective, but for me, what makes us different is what makes us special.

In an Instagram world where everybody seeks perfection, I have often seen that we all try to hide what really makes us unique and use heavily-curated filters to make us look like everybody else. Our culture has influenced us to dance to the same trends, try out the same makeup trends and pose with a certain look. “Be unique! Be iconic! Be extraordinary”, they tell us on social media. But no one mentions: “Be different!” because being different in today’s society is the equivalent of being weird.

This war on being different has caused many people, especially young women, to feel insecure about every aspect of their body and their talents. We are scared of showing our differences and letting our hair run wild and we worry too much about what other people are going to say. Instead of focusing on the things that matter, we spend hours of our lives deciding if a picture on our cell phone is worth sharing and then we waste several hours more worrying that the so-called “perfect” picture did not get enough Likes.

But what is “perfect” anyways?

When I entered the Miss Venezuela pageant, many people criticized me for my height. At 1.70 cm. I was no one’s ideal of the typical Queen and there were times where I was referred to as the “group mascot or “the one that got lost on stage”. I took all of these criticisms as a compliment. For me, the only measurement that matters is the size of my heart and the way I use it to make a positive impact on other people’s lives. Being different among a group of beautiful tall women gave me the freedom to focus on what I had to say. I screamed my message louder than anybody else, danced to the tune of my own beat and had fun in the process. These three ingredients were key to help me win the crown.

So use this example to feel good about being different in your own life. Whether you are the tallest in your class, the smartest woman in your office or the best dancer in your neighbourhood, never shy away from those virtues but rather use them to your advantage. Worry more about perfecting your talent and less about the people who stop you. After all, no great woman really changed the world by being just like everybody else.

¡Los quiero mucho!
