THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT: HYDROPONIC FARMS

Since I returned home from Puerto Rico, I was pleased to partner with a regional telecommunications corporation to secure the funding for the establishment of a second hydroponic garden, this time in San Fernando, at the St Vincent de Paul Home For the Aged.

Like the one we installed last year at St. Helena, this hydroponic system is self-sufficient, low maintenance and efficient, with the seedlings harvesting crops within 2 to 3 weeks after being planted.

In this new venture family and friends, as well as His Worship Alderman Junia Regrello, the Mayor of San Fernando, and my Miss World Trinidad and Tobago sister, Gabriella Walcott, who all gave up their Sunday to lend a helping hand.

We are now on our way to creating food sustainability at the home, with the system which reap enough produce to feed over 100 persons in the area. This means that our initiative will provide food not just for members of the home, but also for vulnerable families in low income apartment buildings nearby who also depend on the home to supplement some of their meals.

But this is just the beginning. There is still so much work to be done in many communities. And so ... the journey continues.
