During my first school term as Kids In Need of Direction’s Youth Mental Health Ambassador, I got the chance to visit twelve high schools to promote mental health awareness and increase mental health literacy. I also got the opportunity to share my mental health testimony across the country and create the safe spaces necessary to assist students in need of mental health resources and other professional help. As a certified youth mental health first-aider, visiting schools allows me to spot young people who are potentially experiencing a mental health challenge, connect them to the appropriate help and also share crucial information which can destigmatize the topic and assist someone on their mental health recovery journey. It is always a pleasure to connect with the students, hear their stories and guide them as best as I can towards a bright, happy and healthy future.
