In 2015, a war broke out which left millions of people displaced.
160.000 immigrants came to Sweden that year and of them a large group was placed in my municipality. I felt I needed to something to help them integrate into their new environment and the Swedish society.
There is a queue of asylum seekers who want to learn Swedish and enter into the Swedish school system at SFI. (Swedish for immigrants).
That’s when and why I created my Youtube Channel called “Swedish for Everyone”. To make sure that people from all around the world, who came to Sweden could feel welcomed. I translate English words and symbols into Swedish using pictures and sign language.
My Youtube channel went viral after the local news media posted an article about my videos and it has now accumulated more than 43.000 views and counting.
Making a video like this takes maybe 15-30 minutes, and the viewers are mostly asylum seekers in Sweden but also followers from their home countries.
Each video has a theme, such as pronouns, kitchen utensils, the climate, gender and feelings. And I’ve tried to upload content based on demands.
Working with this project made me feel like doing something more,
Before the winter was coming I arranged for a clothing collection at my previous school, collecting winter clothes and shoes, which we then gifted to the accomondations.
I also arranged a foundraising before Christmas in my hometown. Raising enough funds so we could by Christmas gifts with school supplies to the 50+ children living at my nearest asylum accomondation.
On thuesday me and a group of volonteres brought the children to a community center nearby where we played, whatched movies and had fun together.
Since I moved away, I’ve continued to promote my youtube channel the best that I can, To continue supporting newcommers, welcoming diversity and raising awareness about language barriers.
Beacause language is the key for human connection.
