Learn about my appointment to 'The Pearl Protectors' as the Social Ambassador of Marine Conservation in Sri Lanka.
I was only seventeen when I was first introduced to the Pearl Protectors, I remember meeting the rest of the Pearl Protectors team and learning about the major threats Sri Lanka's coastline is under. Over 80% of the coral reefs in the Western Province of Sri Lanka alone are effected by the mass pollution that has been occuring in our oceans. Growing up in this Province, that is otherwise known for its endless golden beaches, I knew I had a duty. It was my duty to not only protect the Wellawatte beach, a beach I had grown up on as a child, but to protect my country and to restore Sri Lanka's namesake of being the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean'.
Looking back, I'm glad I took the initiative to protect my country and it made me realise that it is never too late to be the change that the world needs.
