As soon as I had handed my crown to Miss South Africa 2021 – the lovely Lalela Mswane who is a ballet dancer with a law degree – I began my Spanish lessons. I was ready for Puerto Rico, where the globe’s most prestigious competition, the 2021 Miss World Pageant, was held. I was not disappointed by the tropical paradise that is this welcoming Caribbean Island with perfect weather and perfect beaches. You are often told by former Miss World entrants that you make friends for life during this international gathering of pageant participants. I can attest to that.

My Room Mate: I had the sweetest roommate who will be a friend forever, Miss World Namibia, Annerie Mare.

We shared everything, clothes, make-up and stories about growing up in Southern Africa. She often helped me steam my clothes, pointing out when I missed a spot.

Best experience: I loved every minute we all spent rehearsing. Laughing, dancing, sharing with my sisters was an experience I will remember forever.

Biggest blooper: I discovered that I had two left feet when we were learning our dance routines – I kept missing the count which made my sisters giggle and groan!

Best meal: Every meal that had plantain and chicken made me happy.

I cried and laughed when: I was video calling my grandfather. It was his first video call and the awe in his voice was wonderful. He was incredulous when he said: Abi, I can see you.” He also marvelled at how beautiful my temporary Puerto Rico home was. I cried tears of joy.
