For those unfamiliar with Miss World, the Beauty With a Purpose segment singles out and recognizes the Miss World contestant who is shown to have made a real difference to people in need in her homeland.
Without a doubt, I forthrightly chose to address issues pertaining to women and children from Somalia on the subject of climate refugees. The main challenge was that I was located in Canada, and had never set foot in Somalia since I was born at the refugee camp in Kenya, to be precise, at Hagadera Refugee Camp.
How will this work out? I love women, and children, right? I need months to prepare, visit Somalia, fund-raise and make an impact, and we had just a week to accomplish everything. How is this gonna work? Either way, we had to deliver.
My Miss Somali team did the unimaginable. We worked in reverse order! The team compiled my project in a matter of days, put everything together and I had to voice the video for submission, after all, my intentions were pure, our goal was to have a start point and grow from there. If we told our story now we can always build up after the Miss World competition and work on assisting more women and children affected by climate issues, and that is exactly what happened.
My Beauty With a Purpose project calls your attention to the fact that deteriorating drought conditions have displaced nearly 1 Million people in Somalia, leading to severe effects on children’s nutrition, women’s reproductive health among other issues. If drastic steps are not taken by April 2022, the situation will get worse, leading to a serious humanitarian crisis and this is where my voice became more vocal. It is my appeal to each and everyone to support this cause as united we stand, together we fall.
