As a former refugee, I clearly understand the challenges faced by Somali women and girls living in the camps. One of the major problems is reproductive and hygiene issues especially during their menstruation periods. With lack of resources, it can be extremely daunting finding clean water to keep fresh and healthy. As a climate refugee advocate, I took initiative to find out how I can help some of the refugee girls living in camps.
To achieve some mileage, I met with PadMad founder, Madhvi Dalal. Pad Mad is a non profit social enterprise that creates employment for marginalized women who make reusable cloth pads using locally produced materials, as well as delivering the pads to girls and women in need.
Their efforts have helped in keeping the girls in school, and preventing them from resorting to prostitution to pay for disposable pads. PadMad pads are made from 100% cotton and are entirely eco-friendly and significantly cheaper than alternatives.
Our meeting comprised of future working relationships, streamlined efforts to help and asisst in training adolescent boys and girls on how to make recyclable pads. In due course of time, I will keep you updated on further progress.
