Last weekend I joined the scouts of the Srečkov Steg troop at their winter camp. Spending time with them in nature was a beautiful reminder of how important authentic experiences, teamwork, and human connection are for young people growing up in an increasingly digital world. As the current Miss Slovenia, I had the opportunity to lead a workshop dedicated to the topic of online violence and respectful digital communication. This issue is becoming one of the most pressing challenges facing young people today. While technology has created incredible opportunities for learning, connection, and self-expression, it has also opened the door to new forms of harm. Cyberbullying, online harassment, and digital exclusion affect a growing number of young people worldwide. Unlike traditional bullying, online violence does not stop when a young person leaves school or logs off their device. Hurtful comments, public shaming, or the spreading of harmful content can remain online indefinitely and reach a wide audience within seconds. This permanence and visibility can intensify feelings of isolation, anxiety, and helplessness for those who are targeted. Many young people also hesitate to speak about their experiences because they fear judgment, retaliation, or the belief that their concerns will not be taken seriously. For this reason, education, awareness, and open conversations are essential. Creating safe spaces where young people can talk honestly about their digital experiences is one of the first steps toward meaningful change. During the workshop, we discussed the different forms online violence can take, why it happens, and how each of us can contribute to creating a safer and more respectful digital environment. We spoke about empathy, responsibility, and the importance of standing up for others in online spaces. Even small actions—offering support to someone who is being targeted, refusing to participate in harmful conversations, or reporting abusive behavior—can have a powerful impact. Through my work, I aim to encourage young people to understand that the values of kindness, respect, and responsibility apply equally in the digital world as they do in everyday life. Technology should be a tool that empowers young people, strengthens communities, and amplifies positive voices. I am deeply grateful to the scouts for welcoming me so warmly, for their openness in discussing such an important topic, and for the inspiring energy they shared throughout the weekend. Experiences like this strengthen my commitment to continuing my advocacy work and to contributing to the global mission of promoting compassion, respect, and positive change among young people.
