The 16th of October 2023 was a special day, at least for me and certainly for them too. For those who do not know, I have a cousin, “Belinha”, who has a disability and at every family gatherings she is the soul of the party, she dances with everyone or even alone, gives lots of hugs, and says with great pride “you are my cousin!”. And recently, she made me a request: to visit her as Miss World Portugal at AICIA, the Institution for the Integration of Maladaptive Children in Arouca, where she goes every day of the week to socialize and do different activities. 

Until that day, I didn't have a full understanding of what AICIA is. A place with excellent conditions and professionals, where there is coexistence, support, recreational activities, gardening, sports, therapy, and handcrafts in order to create possible habits of personal autonomy as well as develop the capabilities of each individual and be included. 

My cousin was full of joy. She showed me her works, such as handmade rugs and embroidered pictures/paintings, and told everyone “she’s my cousin!”. She was proud, and so was I, because I know that for her, it was a such a special day to have her cousin by her side. 

Furthermore, I have no doubt that I made yesterday a little more special for all of my cousin's colleagues and friends, as active listening, attention and interaction, has a positive impact on each person’s happiness and well-being.
