The Dharavi Dream Project
I was so lucky to watch and meet some amazing and talented kids from the “Dharavi Dream Project”. This is a project that is located in Mumbai, and helps young kids evolve and make a living out of music and performing.
This project started in 2014, and today has over 150 students and 8 instructors. What makes this project so special is that it helps kids to follow their dream and gives the kids a place to be, earn money and become confident, instead of turning to the street and crime.
Today this group did dancing, beatboxing, rapping and singing, and I can't believe how talented and strong they are. I especially remember a young girl. She was a rapper and wore a hijab. She said that being a hijabi and rapper is not easy, but that she does not want to change for anyone.
Hearing this from such a young girl was very inspiring. I believe we all can remember how it was to be a teenager and wanting to fit in. And as we get older, we still want and try to fit in, instead of being our truest self. I am therefore so impressed that this young girl already knows how she is and is confident enough to stand for what she believes, and not let other people's opinion affect her values.
Watching and meeting these young kids was absolutely fantastic. Despite me not being a dancer, singer, rapper or beatboxer, I can recognize talent and strength, and I believe this kid has exactly that. I am really looking forward to seeing where this takes them, and I am sending them with lots of luck.
