A golden milestone was celebrated in Puerto Rico as Wilnelia Merced Forsyth, Miss World 1975, marked the 50th anniversary of her historic win with a glamorous gala dedicated to this historic moment for Puerto Rico and charity.

The Royal Evening Gala, held in San Juan, was a celebration of Wilnelia’s crowning legacy. The event benefited Delia’s Respite for Caregivers, a new organization founded by Wilnelia in memory of her late mother, Delia Cruz, who passed away in 2022 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. The foundation provides much-needed support to caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients.

Accompanied by her son, Jonathan Joseph Forsyth, Lady Wilnelia attended a series of events culminating in the gala at The Plaza Hotel, where funds were raised to support scholarship programs and charitable initiatives.

“My deepest gratitude to everyone who joined this meaningful night,” shared Wilnelia. “We celebrated not only the 50 years since I was crowned Miss World, but also a cause very close to my heart, support for those who care for Alzheimer’s patients. Your generosity and enthusiasm made this Gala truly unforgettable.”

During the evening, Wilnelia, who was wearing a stunning gold gown, presented the first Delia’s Respite for Caregivers Award to Carlos Bermúdez, CEO of San Juan Moda, recognizing his outstanding career and contributions to the Puerto Rican fashion industry.

The celebration brought together seven former Miss World Puerto Rico titleholders from different generations, including the reigning titleholder, Valéria Perez. The reigning Mr World, Danny Mejia, also joined Wilnelia to honor her achievements and highlight the beauty and social commitment of Puerto Rican women and men.

Born in Caguas, Wilnelia was crowned Miss World 1975 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Her journey to the crown was not without obstacles. She nearly missed traveling to London due to financial difficulties. But with determination and her mother’s support, who worked as a hairdresser, she made the trip that would change her life and bring immense pride to her Caribbean island (Read more about it HERE). 

After her reign, Wilnelia continued to shine as an ambassador of Puerto Rican culture, participating in major advertising campaigns such as “Dos puertorriqueñas de verdad” (Two True Puerto Rican Women), and dedicating herself to philanthropy, the arts, and fashion.

Today, her name continues to inspire new generations. In recognition of her legacy, a hall in the Caguas City Hall proudly bears her name.
