In 1979, the islands of Bermuda were home to just over 55,000 people, a small community set in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. From this picturesque British Overseas Territory, surrounded by turquoise waters and quiet elegance, emerged a young woman who would go on to make history.

Gina Swainson was crowned Miss World at the Royal Albert Hall in London, a moment of immense pride for Bermuda.

47 years later, a proposal was welcomed to commemorate her historic triumph with a street named in her honor in her hometown of St. George’s, a lasting tribute to a night that, as her family recalls, felt “unbelievable.”

Gina, who today is a counsellor for at-risk young people and lives in Surrey, in the UK, with husband Peter Jovetic, shared:

“Winning the crown nearly 50 years ago was a special moment in my life and I have always appreciated the love and support I received from all Bermudians. Thank you for remembering.”

Swainson could not be present at the inauguration.
