A hospice is a place where individuals facing terminal illnesses receive care that prioritizes comfort and quality of life rather than pursuing curative treatment. Not many people know about them, and even fewer talk about them.

On Sunday, 3 August 2025, the reigning Miss World, Opal Suchata, visited Coventry Myton Hospice as part of her UK Beauty with a Purpose Tour, drawing attention to the powerful, and often overlooked, impact of palliative care .

Opal used her platform to champion humanitarian causes and bring much-needed awareness to topics she deeply cares about, including cancer care and end-of-life support .

During her visit, she was accompanied by Sharandeep Sahota, a semi-finalist in Miss England. Together, they spent time with patients, staff, and volunteers, gaining insight into the hospice’s work with those living with respiratory conditions, organ failure, cancer, neurological ailments, and other life-limiting illnesses. Their presence brought warmth, positivity, and renewed awareness of the vital services Myton provides .

Opal reflected on the experience with heartfelt admiration:

“Visiting The Myton Hospices was an inspiring experience. I had the chance to speak with some of the patients, and their strength, wisdom, and inner peace moved me. One lady told me she’s planning a party to celebrate her life with family and friends, while she’s still there, which in her own words, makes much more sense then a funeral service, when she no longer will be here. That was so brave and so beautiful. The nurses and staff I met all shared the same feeling: they’re happy to be there, bringing joy and light to people in such delicate moments. It’s a place filled with love.”

Sapphire Earle, Senior Staff Nurse at Coventry Myton Hospice, remarked:

“It was an honour to host Miss World at our hospice. It’s fantastic that she’s using her platform to be a role model for women and girls across the world, and to raise awareness of the importance of palliative care and the difference hospices can make to our patients’ lives. We talked about how death shouldn’t be a taboo subject and the importance of having open conversations to ensure people’s needs and wishes are known and respected at the end of life. Everyone deserves what we call a ‘good death’, one that promotes privacy, dignity, care and compassion. At Myton, we are proud to be able to provide this level of support.”

As a symbolic gesture, Miss World added a handwritten note to Myton’s memory tree, honoring those they’ve cared for, showing respect and appreciation for the hospice’s mission.

The visit underscored the critical role hospices play in offering holistic, person-centered care tailored to individual needs and preferences. Both Opal and Sharan helped amplify awareness of this quiet but transformative work, helping to open broader dialogue about compassionate end-of-life.
