As the twilight hues over the waters of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, a singular journey began. On board a sleek river cruise, Thailand’s tourism ambassador, Opal Suchata, glided past landmark after landmark with the promise of spectacle, but with remembrance and honor.

The annual light-festival, Vijit Chao Phraya 2025, usually framed by fireworks, in deference to the national mourning period, traditional pyrotechnics were consciously replaced by a choreographed drone performance in a tribute to the late Queen Mother Sirikiti. 

Beneath Bangkok’s skyline, the cruise began. The breeze lifted on the river, Opal appeared in an elegant silk black dress, proper for the occasion and the mourning period. Miss World shared:

“It was a special evening. We had the honor to remember Her Majesty’s dedication to our people and to witness the beauty of our city Bangkok, and a reminder to always be grateful for what we have and show it to the world. Amidst the mourning period, the government has adjusted the format of the event to be appropriate but still keeps it going to keep the local economy going and adding stories of Her Majesty so when people come they see the hard work she has put into her people. I think that is very understanding.”

From the cruise deck, one stops at each highlighted landmark, from the graceful arc of the Rama VIII Bridge to the dignified form of the Memorial Bridge. 

The lights danced on the river’s surface; the outlines of historic temples, modern façades and riverside life all became part of this memorable event.

The heart of the evening was the drone spectacle. Hundreds, even thousands of coordinated drones rose. One formation paid homage to the legacy of Queen Sirikit of Thailand with a turtle motif, a reverent nod to the Queen Sirikit Turtle Foundation, the conservation project she initiated in 1979 to safeguard sea turtles and promote environmental sustainability. (She had donated her private island, Koh Man Nai, to serve as the “Queen’s Project on Sea Turtle Conservation”.) The turtle image, emerging in illuminated flight, felt both elemental and transcendent.

The drones echoed and elevated tradition and the rich culture and history of Thailand. Each formation wowed those witnessing the spectacle.

The Thai organizers, via Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), made clear that the event will not only “ignite the Chao Phraya River to become a world-class stage” but also regenerate local business and meaningful travel experiences.

These are values Thailand holds dear: cultural heritage, environmental action, and the power of story. For Opal, who represents Thai tourism to the world, this night offered a relevant narrative. In each illuminated landmark and each drone formation, there was a chapter of Thailand waiting to be told to the world.
