The reigning Miss World Japan, Kiana Tomita, recently shared a glimpse of her volunteer work, providing free custom-made pillows to victims of earthquakes and floods in Japan. Partnering with Showa Nishikawa, she joined over a hundred locals in a project where each pillow was meticulously adjusted to fit an individual’s head, neck and shoulders. 

As she explained, while people were being fitted, she had the chance to listen to their stories about the disasters and their disrupted sleep. What stayed with her most was the strength and warm smiles of those who had endured so much, turning what could have been a simple act of distribution into a precious exchange of humanity.

Her initiative comes at a time when Japan continues to deal with the impact of severe natural disasters. The magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula on January 1, 2024 claimed more than 500 lives and left entire communities struggling to rebuild. 

In August 2025, floods and landslides swept through southern Japan, forcing mass evacuations across six prefectures and leaving many missing. At the same time, residents of the remote Tokara Islands were shaken by hundreds of earthquakes within just a few weeks, a reminder of the country’s precarious position on the Ring of Fire, where about 20% of the world’s tremors occur.

Against such a backdrop, Kiana’s act of kindness carries symbolic weight. A pillow may seem small compared to the scale of devastation, but in giving comfort she also offered dignity and a sense of care to those navigating trauma. It is a symbol of the Miss World’s Beauty With a Purpose, where compassion and service transcend competition and enter the realm of true social impact. 

In her words and in her actions, Kiana showed that healing begins not only with rebuilding homes and infrastructure, but also with listening, sharing and bringing a little rest to those who need it most.

Earlier this year, in Telangana, Kiana represented Japan at the 72nd Miss World Festival making her country proud: she was a Top 5 finalists in the important Head to Head Challenge in Asia and Oceania.
