Danza de los Viejitos

What an honor it has been for me to be able to bring my roots and culture to Puerto Rico and also a share it with the whole world!!

THE TRUE MEANING

This dance is originally from my beautiful state of Michoacán Mexico. Its origin dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when the Purépecha culture made offerings to the Old God or Sun God (Tata Jurhiata), in order to have good harvests. According to tradition, the Danza de los Viejitos was born specifically in the town of Jarácuaro, located in the Lake Pátzcuaro region. At that time the dance could only be performed by the petámunis –the four main wise men of the community– who were therefore also elders.

Colorful and very Mexican !

The suit I am wearing is an incredible creation by Cesar Cortes.  I love every detail, especially the Virgen of Guadalupe embroidered Poncho. The suit I am wearing is an incredible creation by Cesar Cortes.  I love every detail, especially the Virgen of Guadalupe embroidered Poncho.
