The folding fan, a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.

The folding fan, known as suehiro ("spreading wide at the end"), has long been considered a lucky charm symbolizing prosperity, due to its shape that widens as it opens. Even today, it is highly appreciated as a celebratory gift.

Among such auspicious items, we are honored to present a Kyosensu—a traditional Kyoto folding fan—offered by Hakuchikudo, as a charity gift. Each Kyosensu is crafted entirely by skilled artisans in Kyoto and Shiga.

Founded in 1718, during the reign of Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth shogun of the Edo period, Hakuchikudo boasts a history of over 300 years as one of Japan’s most established fan makers. Their collection includes traditional fans made with time-honored techniques, as well as fashion-forward designs featuring lace and rhinestones, and even collaboration pieces with artists and creators from different industries.

For this occasion, Hakuchikudo has generously provided the Hishō Fan Set—a collaboration Kyosensu created with artist Saeko Hirano.

Saeko Hirano is a contemporary artist known for her unique woodcarving artworks inspired by hankei (woodblocks used in traditional Japanese woodblock printing). Her pieces combine vivid colors with the carved textures of chisels, expressing the consistent theme of "the energy of life." She has exhibited her work in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, participated in live painting events, and has received numerous awards in both domestic and international art competitions.

May this gift, with its symbol of suehiro, bring blessings and prosperity to all.
