SAVE THE TIGER
“SAVE THE TIGER”, a campaign by the Minister for Forests, Cultural Affairs, Fisheries, Government of Maharashtra, Sudhir Mungantiwar @sudhir.mungantiwar .
The international delegates were asked to write reports on their Miss World website personal pages, as well as on their social media, about the tigers’ situation in India, most specifically in Maharashtra, where a festival to promote the cause will take place March 1st to 3rd - the Tadoba Festival.
Here is my report about the SAVE THE TIGER
Status
Serious efforts for the preservation of the Royal Bengal Tiger are going on in India since 1st April, 1973. These efforts assume great significance in view of the fact that about 70 percent of the population of the Tigers all over the world is in India. This Ambitious programme on the part of the Central Government of India and the Governments of the states where the Tiger reserves are situated has added a 54th Tiger Reserve very recently. As per the latest census India is home to about 3167 Tigers.
Madhya Pradesh state in the Central India has the maximum numbers of Tigers in India as per the latest reports followed by Karnataka and Uttarakhanda States. Mahartshtra to the west of Madhya Pradesh also have a significant number of 446 Tigers in its three Tiger Rerserves viz Melghat (Amravati District ), Tadoba – Andhari (Chandrapur District) and Pench (Nagpur District). There is good news that the population of the Tigers has increased in India. However the serious cause of concern is the reduction in the number of tigers in some reserves and there is a need to be vigilant and cautious in other reserves to preserve and enhance the tiger population.
The Challenges and Difficultis
The efforts towards the Tiger preservation are facing the following difficulties
1. Illegal hunting and poaching of Tiger for clandestine trade of the Tiger skin and other parts
2. Human Encroachment in the forest and jungle inhabitates of Tigers. This also results in the Human Tiger conflicts. Tigers attacking the humans.
3. Loss of habitat ie. the forest and jungle area where the Tigers can find their prey to sustain their population
What can Help.
Apart from the Official Government and Forest Departments efforts, the most important factor which can mitigate the challenges in the Tiger preservation, and help a great deal in the efforts to this end is the spread of Education and Awareness about the Ecology, Role of wild life in the preservation of the Ecological Balance and its contribution to human life and wellbeing amongst the people in general and in particularly to the people living in the vicinity and the peripheral boundaries surrounding the Tiger Reserve Forests. Only the sensitized and aware people living around the forest reserves can really help in stopping the illegal poaching, stopping the human activities in the forests which are detrimental to the Tigers presence. Such educated and aware persons can also help in ensuring that the trees are not cut from the habitats of tigers so that the tigers keep getting their prey to live on.
How Miss World Can Help in Tiger Preservation
This is where the role of Miss World contestants comes into play.
We from all over the world are great influencers.
We wield tremendous power and influence over the people, particularly the youth who are playing a very important and key role in Ecology conservation all over the world.
Miss World can contribute a great deal to the spreading of the message of the dire need for ecological conservation and Preservation of the tiger on the brink of extinction and educate the youth and masses residing in the vicinity and borders of the Tiger reserves forests.
The views and opinions of the Miss World are heard and considered by the people, particularly youth. We can use our influence to educate and make people aware of the urgent need for preservation and contribute significantly to the efforts of the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra State.
