When something is your purpose it stays with you forever. This is why I choose a cause that meant soo much to me. Helping children who are just like me. Who grew up in the same harsh systems I grew up in. I was a child who grew up an asylum seeker, living in asylum/ refugee camps for over 10 years of my life. Not knowing when it would end but having the faith, determination and drive to never let the world estimate me as a person. And I eventually exceeded their estimates and stepped into my excellence, with the love and care of family and community too.
Make education a superpower I launched my first campaign called make education a superpower because going to school was sometimes the only escape a child had from the stresses in these centres. And I wanted to ensure they used the tools they learned there and see it as their superpower. I wanted to encourage them to never give up on it our themselves. As the pandemic hit, and schools went online, it became hard for kids to due their homework at home due to lack of digital equipment. So I fundraiser and partnered with children's charity variety to supply iPads to 3 centres to put into computer rooms so the kids could always have that.
The birth of Foodle initiative Coming back from Miss world I realised there was still soo much more that could be done and decided to look further to areas that may not get enough attention. I started to think about families who have recently transitioned from living in an asylum centre into living in normal society and remembered how hard that initial transition was like for my mom having to go from having no money to paying enormous bills. I started up Foodle which aims to provide food to these families so they can use the little money they have to get settled into their new home and put the money towards other important items and bills. This initiative is piloted in the Dublin area and I and my friend volunteer our time and pack food every Thursday since it began. This initiative tackles food waste too as the food is donated to us from local businesses rather than throwing it out and is supported by FoodCloud, the Africa centre and Siol foundation.
Day out to the cinema with the kids from the Galway DP centreAs well as education programs, kids just want to have fun and have someone there to talk too. I began mentoring the kids in the local asylum centre in Galway and took them out for a fun trip to the cinema to see the new Spider-Man movie during their midterms. To cover the day I used fees I earned from giving talks in private sectors and also the support of siol foundation.
