Nene Bah

Known to its neighbors as the ‘’West African Water Tower’’, water plays a vital role in Guinea's economy. The original inhabitant of Conakry, the capital of Guinea, is the Baga people. The name Baga derives from the Susu phrase Bae Rake, "the people of the seaside." Given its exposure to the seaside, the Baga community is a ''fishing community'' whose skills are proudly passed down from one generation to the next.

In this image, one can observe a ‘’pirogue,’’ a working tool that connects Guinean communities to the sea, and consequently food. Over time, these Pirogues, otherwise known as canoes, have created new horizons and opportunities for communities far beyond making ends meet. They started using the canoes as a means of inter-island travel for community members, but also as a way to connect visitors from the capital to surrounding islands, showing off magnificent tourist sites of the lower coast of Conakry.

It is the history of these valiant Baga people that this image illustrates, people whose contribution to the economic growth of Guinea and development of the country's tourism and cultural heritage is undeniable.
