Beauty with a Purpose
My Beauty with a Purpose is more than individual initiatives; it's a vibrant mosaic showcasing the multifaceted strength of Ethiopian women. From their pursuit of education to their resilience in challenging environments, and the celebration of their cultural tapestry, I aim to amplify their voices. Join me in weaving a brighter future where their stories inspire, their struggles are acknowledged, and their dreams can flourish. Together, let's unveil the true strength of Ethiopia – a strength woven from education, dignity, and the celebration of traditions.
From Barefoot Walks to World Stage: My Voice for Ethiopian Women
Hey everyone, it's Rgat Afwerki here! I'm representing Ethiopia at the Miss World stage, But beauty for me goes way beyond the crown. It's about using my platform to amplify the voices of the incredible women who shaped me – the women of Ethiopia.
Remember those long walks to school, barefoot on dusty roads? Yeah, that was my childhood. Growing up in Ethiopia, I saw firsthand the challenges many Ethiopian girls face. Walking for miles, barefoot, just to reach school with nothing but dreams in their pockets. That's why my "Beauty with a Purpose" project focuses on getting them essential supplies – notebooks, pencils, anything to make their journey a little easier. Seeing the spark in their eyes when they receive these small gifts reminds me why I do what I do.
But education isn't the only challenge. Talking about periods feels like a taboo in many places, Ethiopia included. Seeing young girls feeling ashamed and lacking proper hygiene products just wasn't something I could accept. So, I started raising awareness, distributing reusable pads, and showing them they're not alone. The smiles on their faces are the best reward ever!
Then there are the "Women of Burden," strong, resilient women, whom I met in the Entoto Mountains. Carrying heavy firewood every day takes an incredible toll on their bodies and minds. Through my documentary, I want to shine a light on their struggles and advocate for sustainable solutions.
It's not just about hardship though. Look at the vibrant Mursi Tribe, with their unique traditions and lip plates symbolizing beauty and identity. LIP PLATES, guys! I recently visited them and was blown away by their culture and welcoming spirit. It's important to respect diverse practices and celebrate what makes Ethiopia so special.
But listen, it's bigger than just education and hygiene. The Mursi Tribe, the women I met, they're facing a huge burden of malaria. They asked me, "Do you have the vaccine? Do you have pills?" Their pleas touched my heart. They didn't ask for fancy clothes or big stages, just a way to protect themselves and their families. We need to talk about that too, and find ways to support them.
This is why I created the #EthiopianWomenSpeak campaign. I want the world to hear their stories, understand their challenges, and join me in empowering them. Together, we can create a future where every woman in Ethiopia has the chance to learn, thrive, and reach their full potential.
This isn't just my project, it's a movement. So, let's get talking, share the hashtag, and show the world the strength and beauty of Ethiopian women!
