64th Miss World
64th Miss World - 2014#
- 2014 December 14
- ExCel, London
- 121 participants
The Miss World Final was held in the state of the art ICC Auditorium, the largest flexible auditorium in the UK, making it the perfect choice for Miss World!#
Situated in a stunning waterfront location, ExCeL London is located in the heart of London’s Royal Docks, within easy reach of central London.
James Rees, Executive Director, ExCeL London said: "We are delighted to have been chosen as this year's host for the Miss World Final. With our experience of world-famous, televised events such as the G20, Olympic Games and Sports Personality of the Year, we have welcomed royalty, world leaders and stars from across the globe including, most recently, William Hague and Angelina Jolie. It is this experience which will help us deliver a fabulous event and we look forward to welcoming the organisers and contestants of this hugely glamorous occasion to our ICC Auditorium."
After an extravagant Miss World production, Rolene Strauss, fourth year medical student and model hailing from South Africa was crowned Miss World 2014 at the final in London.
Asked why she felt she wanted to be Miss World, the 22 year old captivating beauty said: "Being proudly South African, I have firsthand experience that unity, respect, forgiveness exists those all the aspirations of the Miss World organization, so it would be amazing to represent an org.”
This year’s event was presented by Tim Vincent and Megan Young, the first reigning Miss World to ever host her own final show.
One of the highlights of the spectacular evening came when the candidates surprised Beauty With a Purpose founder and Miss World chairwoman Julia Morley with a tribute in the form of a song number. She was then greeted by Miss World 1994, Bollywood royalty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Miss World 1953 Denise Perrier, and Miss World 2013 Megan Young.
In the lead up to the final, the Miss World contestants got into the joyful spirit of the festive season, as they were special guests of Variety, The Children’s Charity, at their annual Christmas lunch, held at the ballroom of the spectacular Hilton on Park Lane.#
Perhaps the most inspiring part of the day for the girls was hearing from Variety ambassador Matt King OBE, a lawyer and keen sports fan who was left disabled after suffering an unfortunate sports injury when he was a teenager. Hearing of his story and his struggles coming to terms with his disability, and the subsequent help he received from Variety left no dry eye in sight.

Fast Track competitions:#
Beauty with a Purpose#
The most important of all the fast-track competitions, Beauty with a Purpose. The contestants are judged on the basis of their value addition to the society. For the first time ever, there was not one but five girls were declared the winners for this competition.
The Miss World 2014 live event showed the work of contestants from three countries - Kenya, Indonesia and Guyana. Miss World Kenya 2014, Idah Nguma has worked to motivate the parents of children suffering from cleft lip to get the surgery done for them. Cleft lip is a common problem in Kenya. The condition leaves the upper lip of the child cut in half, leaving the baby unable to eat or talk. According to Idah, the problem of cleft lip leaves the kids “disgraced, isolated, rejected and sometimes even killed” because of the stigma attached to it.
Fortunately, the problem has a solution and can easily be cured through a minor surgery. Idah convinces the babies’ parents to get the surgery done. Idah became emotional during one of the successful surgeries. After the baby’s operation, she shed tears of joy as was shown in her video clip.
Miss Indonesia, Maria Rahajeng, has worked to build an old dilapidated bridge for children. She took the responsibility to arrange the funds and even convinced the villagers to come together for the construction work. “We have built a golden pathway to better education and opportunities,” Maria said.
And, Miss Guyana 2014, Rafieya Husain, has worked to highlight and make people aware about the domestic violence faced by young married women in her country. She revealed that she was one of the victims of domestic violence in the past, which made her do something about it. She also told the story of a brave 21-year-old girl named Natasha. Her two kids were killed by her husband in a drunken stupor. She also lost her right arm and fingers in the incident.
