The Crowne Plaza Sanya hosted the Miss World 2010 contestants at this exclusive resort during their month-long stay in Sanya. A Chinese Fashion Show event was hosted at the Hotel on 23rd October; the final Miss World Coronation Gala event was also held in the Hotels Grand Ballroom on the evening of 30th October. The Hotel along with the owning group Huayu Management worked around the clock with many top designers and stage choreographers to ensure the event was on par with the opening of the Shanghai 2010 EXPO.

Accompanied by ten contestants, reigning Miss World Kaiane Aldorino took much needed aid relief to some of the people most affected by the recent rainfall on Hainan island.

The home to Miss World in China for many years and host to this year’s 60th anniversary Final, the tropical island paradise of Hainan has seen the worst rainfall for decades with floods resulting in homes being destroyed and even loss of life.

The contestants visited the grief-stricken town of Qiong Zhong, the third largest area in the Hainan province, said to be the poorest region, with a population of just 216,000. They heard Mayor Wang tell of how 12 families living downstream were rescued that day from their homes that had already been destroyed by the floods. Still more wait for urgent relief from rescue services.

Joining Miss World to hand out the first batch of relief supplies were Scotland, United States, China PR, France, Slovakia, Russia, Australia, Vietnam, Venezuela and Botswana. Together they started the distribution of ten tonnes of rice and five tonnes of cooking oil to some of the families and individuals most affected. Today’s relief, including a cheque for 300,000 RMB, was supported by the RAAS Group who work to produce and distribute blood antigens.

A recent Beauty With A Purpose charity auction of items donated by the Miss World contestants raised two million RMB on the night in Shanghai. Thanks to some generous donations, the total has since been swelled to an incredible eight million RMB (£750,000) for Hainan relief.

A lucky thirteen contestants launched the Sanya Open Beach Volleyball Championships in Olympic Bay, when they took to the sand and threw signed balls into the cheering crowd.

After enjoying a few practice shots themselves, Macedonia FYRO spoke for all contestants when she thanked Sanya’s mayor and leaders for extending an invitation to the opening ceremony. “All of us here today are huge volleyball fans and most of us play for teams at home,’ she said. “It is an honour and a thrill to be here today. It’s a welcome break from rehearsals. I just wish we could play ourselves!”

Other contestants who attended the ceremony and watched the opening match between home team China and Great Britain were Brazil, Bolivia, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Kenya, Malawi, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Slovakia, Turkey and Uganda.

Cayman Islands was especially pleased to be at the tournament. She plays professionally for her national team and managed to meet up with former opponents from the Canadian team. “It’s so strange to see them here,’ she said. “It’s the meeting of two very different worlds for me. I’m really excited to be part of this event.”

Ten contestants attended the final of the LPGA SanyaOpen at the Yalong Bay Golf Course and had the honour of presenting the prestigious trophy to South African Lee-Anne Pace.

At a dazzling fashion show with designs from renowned Chinese designers and hosted by the Huayu Group, the girls displayed their high fashion credentials. The Chinese-inspired show was choreographed and directed by the team behind the magnificent opening of the Beijing Olympic Games.

The quality of the contestants made it a difficult contest to judge but Norway came away with the title of Miss World Top Model. As well as the joy of winning, this title comes with a trophy and automatically guarantees a place in the top 25 of Miss World 2010.

Keen sportswoman Northern Ireland triumphed over her competitors in the Miss World 2010 Sportswoman Final, winning the second guaranteed spot in the live televised final on 30 October.

Despite a 6:30am start, the contestants all entered the spirit of the day, with face paint and banners to support their team mates competing for the honour of their group.

Northern Ireland excelled especially in the long jump event but was also ranked very well in the sprint race and swimming. Her combined score placed her top of the list and she was awarded with the title and a medal – plus that all important place in the Final.

“I’m a triple jumper so I hoped to do well in the long jump,’ said Northern Ireland. “I’m glad I could stand up to the strong competition in the other events and come through with the medal. I’m in the Final! I can’t believe this.”

On the winners’ podium with Northern Ireland were Slovakia in second place and Norway who took third spot. They each received a medal and a bouquet of flowers. The event took place on the beach, gardens and pool of the Sheraton Sanya Resort.
