For the first time Miss World was held in China. The tropical gateway of Sanya hosted the grand final.
On the 8th November, the 2003 contestants embarked on a tour of China visiting Hong Kong, Xian, Shanghai, Haikou, and the capital Beijing.
At the final, each contestant wore a dress designed by themselves or exclusively for them by a Designer from their country. Candace Bushnell, creator of Sex and the City, was on stage to present the Miss World Fashion Award to this year’s winner - Peru.
In 2003, a Scholarship award was given to a contestant, who needed financial assistance, to fund their higher education. The award was presented by Actor Jackie Chan and educator Dr. Colin Niven OBE. The recipient of the scholarship was Miss World Albania, Denisa Kola. She was recognized for her extensive work with the Red Cross and for helping to raise a young war refugee.
