First the contestants travelled to Malta and George Cross Island for pre-filming. Together with the Thames Television crew and the Ken Warwick Dancers, the contestants spent the last week of October at this wonderful location.The contestants filmed their individual introductions and the national costume parade, which was shown during the opening sequence of the final.
On the 5th November, the make up brand Max Factor arranged a Beauty Workshop for all of the Miss World contestants. They were introduced to three cosmetic brands that have proved to be internationally successful; Swedish Formula, Colorfast & Mary Quant.
The pre-contest Miss World Charity Lunch at Grosvenor House raised nearly $200,000. The lunch was held in partnership with the Variety Club of Great Britain. Each contestant brought with her a gift from her country which was auctioned or raffled.
Ulla Weigerstorfer, a 24-year-old veterinary student from Austria, was crowned Miss World 1987. Albani Lozada of Venezuela finished as first runner-up, while Anna Jonsdottir secured the second runner-up position.
