Miss World Canada’s Beauty with a Purpose project, called FinPowered, is on the mission to make financial education more accessible, not only in Canada, but also all around the world.
In most countries, financial literacy is not taught in schools, including the Republic of Moldova, where Svetlana Mamaeva was born.
Throughout 2021, Svetlana has offered free workshops to high school students in Moldova, reaching over 200 students who learned the basics of personal finance and how to budget for their post-secondary education.
Svetlana shares, “One of my goals was to make my workshops relevant and beneficial, not only in Canada, but also abroad. I also wanted FinPowered to support and empower students with the knowledge I wish I had when I was their age. Many students in Moldova plan to study abroad just like I did, which forces them to step into adult life early on and take responsibility for their finances. Due to the significant time difference, my workshops in Moldova are the only ones that are pre-recorded but it meant a lot to find out that some students have even asked the teachers for a copy of the recording to re-watch in their spare time. This is my first time providing workshops in my native language and I hope it is only the beginning of FinPowered around the world.”
In addition to providing workshops to high school students throughout Spring and Fall of 2021, FinPowered celebrated its 50th workshop in Moldova, which was also on national TV.
“I am feeling very grateful to reach this milestone and provide free financial education to hundreds of women in schools, shelters and educational centres across Canada and Moldova. Thank you so much to everyone who continues to support my Beauty with a Purpose project in Canada and abroad!”
