Located in Calgary, Kerby Centre is an educational center and shelter for seniors who are experiencing abuse (usually from their adult child, partner or someone that they trust).
Financial abuse is one of the most common issues that they face, with women being the most impacted. This type of abuse can result in distress, serious harm, and even homelessness.
FinPowered provided over 30 free financial education workshops to Kerby Centre, including FinPowered’s 10-week Financial Empowerment Program.
Svetlana shared that travelling to Calgary to meet the staff and residents in-person, after months of virtual workshops, has been of one the biggest highlights for her work with FinPowered.
“It was a very special trip for me, since it was my very first time travelling for FinPowered. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the majority of my workshops were held virtually, so I really looked forward to meeting everyone in-person. I lost my maternal grandmother last year and being around these kindhearted women truly meant a lot. They made me realize that aside from the educational aspect, the most important part was the connection that we’ve built and the atmosphere of emotional support that we've shared between us.”
