Launched in the early stages of the pandemic, FinPowered is a free financial education program created by Miss World Canada 2020 and Schulich School of Business alumna, Svetlana Mamaeva. In collaboration with the Canadian Centre for Women’s Empowerment, FinPowered has provided over 100 free financial education workshops for women, which includes over 85 workshops in 2020-2021 and 15 workshops since the beginning of 2022.
Svetlana has used her studies and prior work experience in personal banking, where she was recognized as the Top 10% in Canada, to support women in overcoming financial difficulties experienced during the pandemic. Job losses have driven millions of women across the world out of the workforce, while cases of domestic and economic abuse have been record high.
One of FinPowered’s main goals was to raise awareness about the issue of economic abuse. Women who are trying to escape domestic violence are often controlled by their oppressors through money. Without accessible financial education and necessary support, it can be extremely difficult to escape these situations.
