Miss World Canada 2020, Svetlana Mamaeva, launched a 100 km running challenge on social media to raise awareness about economic abuse, where she shared weekly progress on her running, along with information on financial empowerment.
As a part of her Beauty with a Purpose initiative, Svetlana continues to provide free financial education workshops, which include strategies for overcoming economic abuse. General unawareness and lack of education about this issue are a big part of the problem. Many women struggle in silence and don't know that help is available.
Did you know that 95% of women who experience domestic abuse also experience economic abuse? This happens when the perpetrator controls their access to funds needed for food, medication, transportation, and other necessities. It became even more pressing during the pandemic when many households experienced increased financial constraints, while cases of domestic abuse nearly doubled across Canada.
