While hosting FinPowered workshops for shelters across the country, Miss World Canada 2020, Svetlana Mamaeva, noticed that many shelters were experiencing an urgent need for personal protective equipment, including face masks. With shelters reaching maximum capacity, it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep residents safe, especially when it came to the most vulnerable population - our seniors.
Being close to her grandparents, who were impacted by Covid-19, Svetlana felt responsible in lending a helping hand where she could. She ran a fundraising campaign to provide 10,000 face masks to elderly residents at the Dixon Hall shelter in Toronto, Canada.
“Taking care of my grandparents during the pandemic showed me how vulnerable our seniors are in the face of Covid-19," shared Svetlana. "I’ve learned that due to the face mask shortages at local shelters, many elderly residents had to reuse the same masks over and over again. A big thank you to everyone who participated in this fundraising campaign and made a contribution to those who needed it the most.”
