This year, the process was meticulously organized, dividing us continentally and then into smaller groups of three for a more intimate presentation. I found myself alongside Miss Brazil and Miss Cayman Islands, each of us eager to convey our unique journeys.
Miss Brazil opened our session with a compelling narrative of her initiatives, speaking eloquently for about two minutes. Her dedication and passion set a high bar and filled the room with a sense of purpose and inspiration. Then, it was my turn to step into the spotlight.
Growing up in Southern Alberta, my beginnings were humble, from sweeping cigarettes at a local hotel to embarking on a career in international modeling. However, it was an encounter that shook my world—being held up at gunpoint—that became a pivotal moment in my life. Drawing inspiration from Julia Morley's ethos of turning "pain into purpose," I dedicated myself to advocating against gender-based violence. This commitment was recognized with a Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal, an honor that underscored the importance of understanding the unique journeys of survivors. Volunteering at the police station further deepened my comprehension and empathy towards the complexities of survivors' experiences.
Following my narrative, Miss Cayman Islands shared her story, adding to the tapestry of diverse and powerful voices that filled the room. The experience of sharing my story, particularly in such a distinguished setting, was liberating. For some judges, it was a reintroduction to my advocacy and achievements; for others, it was a first glimpse into the depth of my commitment to making a difference.
I also seized this moment to share my dream of becoming the first Miss World from Canada. This dream isn't just about achieving a personal milestone; it's about leveraging the platform to amplify the voices of those who have experienced gender-based violence, to inspire change, and to continue the legacy of "Beauty with a Purpose" that Julia Morley has so passionately championed.
