As I reflect on my journey from Botswana to India, the universal language of conservation resonates deeply with me. It reminds me that, regardless of our origins, we are all connected by our shared responsibility to protect the natural world.
Did you know that The Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, a wildlife sanctuary in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra state in India, is regarded as one of the world’s most preferred tiger destinations? The reserve was Established in 1955 and is often hailed as the Tiger Capital of Maharashtra. It houses over 80 tigers within the reserve and 200 across the broader landscape. The reserve's success is a testament to India's concerted efforts to reverse the decline of its tiger population. India is home to over 70% of the world's wild tigers.
The plight of tigers in India is complex, involving habitat degradation, human conflict, poaching, and the illegal wildlife trade. Today, poaching remains the most significant threat to their survival. However, initiatives like Project Tiger, launched in April 1973, have been instrumental in the resurgence of the tiger population.
The journey of conservation is one of continuous learning. In Botswana, we pride ourselves in being home to the Big Five – lion, leopard, African elephant, rhino and buffalo and serving as one of the world's best safari destinations. The challenge of conserving species like the tiger, unfamiliar to African landscapes, presents new learning opportunities. The International Big Cat Alliance's collaborative efforts, with funding commitment, exemplify the power of global partnerships in safeguarding our planet's biodiversity.
I am particularly looking forward to the Tadoba Festival to learn more about inclusive conservation models that harmonise the relationship between people and wildlife. Historically, conservation strategies have sometimes led to the displacement of Indigenous communities, disrupting their livelihoods and cultural practices. The festival presents an opportunity to explore sustainable coexistence models, ensuring that the protection and increase of tiger populations go hand in hand with the welfare of local communities.
