Bush to Beach is a heartfelt initiative centered around the well-being of our children. The success of Bush to Beach 2023, our latest endeavor, has left us in awe – perhaps the best one yet, building on the legacy that dates back to 2006.

The journey to 2023 began with planning and fundraising that commenced what felt like ages ago, disrupted initially in 2021 by the unforeseen challenges posed by the pandemic. The subsequent year, meticulously planned and ready to unfold, faced another setback, forcing a last-minute postponement, a disheartening experience for the children and all involved.

Undeterred, we set a new date for early October 2022. Plans were laid out by July, accommodations were secured, and the groundwork with paperwork and participant selection in Brewarrina was underway. However, unforeseen natural disasters, including floods, prompted another tough decision to postpone, isolating the region for over nine weeks. Safety, governance, and risk remained paramount in our planning.

The rescheduled date finally arrived, with the departure from Brewarrina on February 2nd, 2023, and a return on February 6th. Countless meetings took place with South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club (NSW), Brewarrina Council, and various stakeholders, ensuring a seamless and safe experience for all involved.

It's important to acknowledge the challenges faced by families without access to modern conveniences like computers and internet, a reality often overlooked in urban settings. Our dedicated team, led by Jodie and her colleagues, worked tirelessly to overcome these hurdles, collating over 200 pages of paperwork for the event.

The highlight of Bush to Beach 2023 was the participation of children from Brewarrina, Goodooga, and Weilmoringle – areas that endured severe drought in 2020. Their arrival at McDonald's Warriewood, after a 12-hour bus journey, marked the beginning of a transformative experience.

The weekend unfolded with swimming proficiency at Collaroy pool, thanks to the efforts of South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club and other volunteers. The collaboration continued with snorkelling lessons, CPR and First Aid workshops.

Surfing lessons at Collaroy Beach, a fantastic lunch by Manly Country Women’s Association, and an evening filled with Circus on the Sand showcased the diverse activities designed for the children. Special mentions go to Matt Granger and the team from Manly Surf School, who have been dedicated supporters since 2006.

The weekend also featured Nippers events, Beach Volleyball hosted by Hanna from Northern Beaches Volleyball Association, Taekwondo lessons, and a memorable pizza dinner on the beach, generously provided by Pizza Hut.

Acknowledging the incredible contributions from volunteers, including the team at South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club, the Manly CWA, and numerous individuals who dedicated over 1200 hours, we express our deepest gratitude. The event would not have been possible without their unwavering commitment.
