"Beauty" pageants have long stopped being just about beauty and male gaze. Although not a regular spectator of pageants, this year's Miss Sri Lanka contestant for Miss World, Anudi Gunasekara caught my eye due to her project for "Beauty with a Purpose". "Saheli" is a project that addresses "Period Poverty" which unfortunately is very much an issue even in 2025. I was impressed by the thoughtfulness and throughness with which she approached the isse. She has made sure to approach the issue not just for the short term, but also has a long term vision. The project addresses sustainability, cultural sensitivity, breaking taboos, breaking taboos and creating awareness among men and boys, AND the heavy taxation on sanitary products. The focus on female inmates, monateries and slums is quite commendable as they are often invisible. As a fellow alumni of University of Kelaniya, a sister and a fellow country woman, I applaud her efforts and intiative in addressing this issue, and wish her all the very best not only to bring the crown to Sri Lanka, but also to achieve her dream in serving the country as a diplomat.
