Picking up a few pieces of trash whenever I’m out for a walk isn’t new for me, I’ve done it for years. Litter bothers me because of its harmful impact on the animals that live outdoors. Recently, while walking through Delft, I saw a coot that had built its nest from trash. It broke my heart to think birds must use our waste, and to imagine chemicals and microplastics leaching into the water. That moment inspired me to launch a campaign. At first, I considered organizing clean-up days. Although those events are valuable, they’re only temporary fixes. The litter always returns unless behavior changes. That’s why I created Pick Up 3: a small daily habit with the potential for a big impact, even if it reaches only a few people.
