Dr. Colin Niven OBE and Jackie Chan presenting the Miss World Scholarship at the 53rd edition (2003) of Miss World

During the 53rd edition (2003) of Miss World, a special award was introduced called the Miss World Scholarship. Its purpose was to provide the funding to help a recipient pursue a higher education or extra courses that would better her life and community. A path that was otherwise made difficult by the large financial burden that higher education can have.

54 of the 106 delegates applied for this award, and had to be interviewed by a panel that included Dr. Colin Niven OBE. Dr. Niven is an internationally known educator and headmaster of three international schools in China: Dulwich College in Shanghai, Beijing and Suzhou. During the 53rd edition Dr. Niven, who presented alongside Jackie Chan, said of his decision:

In the end I opted for someone who’s worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross. She’s worked tirelessly, and very enthusiastically, for human rights. She’s helped to bring up a young war refugee, that her family adopted despite their own hardships. She’s now in her own university in her own country studying Economics. This award will enable her to complete such a worthwhile venture.

Did you notice how excited Denisa got hearing those words during the telecast? When interviewed later about what she would like to do with the scholarship, she talked about potentially taking Politics abroad in London or New York, but that she would always return to Albania to work.
