During a meeting with Muhimbili National Hospital’s Executive Director, Dr. Delilah Kimambo, plans were outlined for a nationwide autism awareness campaign.

Miss World Tanzania 2026, Latricia Ian, recently met with the Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, Dr. Delilah Kimambo, to plan a nationwide autism awareness campaign.

Autism awareness and support in Tanzania remain limited, with many cases going undiagnosed or identified at a later stage due to low public awareness and a shortage of specialized services. Cultural stigma and misconceptions can also affect how families seek help, often leading to isolation or delayed intervention.

Muhimbili National Hospital is Tanzania’s leading referral and teaching hospital, playing an important role in improving the situation. During their meeting, Latricia and Dr. Kimambo emphasized the importance of education and encouraging open conversations about autism across communities.

As part of her visit, Latricia spent time with an autistic child and her parent, gaining insight into the challenges faced by children with autism and their families.

The planned campaign will focus on helping parents recognize early signs of autism, promoting early intervention, and encouraging acceptance. It will also aim to create supportive environments where children with autism feel understood and valued.

Ian will represent Tanzania at the 75th Anniversary Edition of Miss World in Vietnam, August 9 to September 5.
