Miss World Africa’s runner-up intends to empower youth and boost tourism with her initiative

Miss World Namibia Selma Kamanya, who last May became a Miss World Top 8 finalist and 1st runner-up in Africa, has launched the Global Namibia 1 Project, an initiative aimed at empowering youth, boosting tourism, and strengthening international connections.

The project was introduced at a fundraising event hosted by the InnoNation Foundation. Kamanya said the initiative is built on four pillars: tourism and trade, youth empowerment, innovation, and global connectivity.

She highlighted the importance of tourism as a driver of economic growth and employment, and described young people as Namibia’s greatest asset. She also underlined that pageantry should be recognized as a platform for leadership and social impact.

The project, which is set to roll out next month, will provide Namibian youth with opportunities in sectors such as entrepreneurship, technology, agriculture, energy, and the arts. It also aims to link local talent with international markets, investors, and knowledge networks.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare welcomed the initiative. Executive Director Lydia Indombo, speaking on behalf of Minister Emma Kantema, said it aligns with government efforts to uplift women and youth. She praised Kamanya’s leadership, saying her work demonstrates the potential of young Namibians when given support.

“Through the Global Namibia 1 Project, I want to showcase tourism as a driver of global trade and create opportunities for young Namibians by connecting our country to the world.”

InnoNation Foundation’s Lloyd Sikeba encouraged public and private stakeholders to back the project, calling it an investment in Namibia’s future.
