Miss World Africa 2025, Hasset Dereje, has shared uplifting news from her visit to Mekelle, the capital city of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, where she joined the celebrations of Ashenda, a unique cultural festival that honors the voices, freedom, and role of women in society.

Traditionally celebrated by the Tigray and Amhara communities, and also in parts of Eritrea, Ashenda takes place annually in mid-August following the two-week Filseta fast. Named after the tall grass tied around the waists of celebrants, the festival sees girls and women dress in white, style their hair with intricate braids, and gather in groups to sing, drum, and dance. More than a cultural holiday, Ashenda is a declaration of womanhood, freedom, and identity.

Reflecting on her experience, Hasset wrote:

“In Mekelle, surrounded by vibrant colors, music and the joyful spirit of Ashenda, I felt deeply honored to be part of something so meaningful. Ashenda is a celebration of womanhood, freedom and identity and being welcomed into this tradition was truly humbling.”

During her stay, Hasset also met with regional and national leaders including Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede, President of the Tigray Interim Administration; H.E. Shewit Shanka, Minister of Culture & Sport; and H.E. Dr. Ergoge Tesfaye, Minister of Women and Social Affairs. She expressed gratitude to Abrehet Mearey, owner of Abri Motors, for her hospitality, describing the warmth and commitment of those she met as “inspiring.”

Beyond the festivities, Hasset used her platform to champion a life-saving cause. Together with Abri Motors and the Tigray Health Association, she launched a blood donation drive to help address the region’s critical shortage.

“Giving blood is a simple yet powerful act of solidarity and compassion,” Hasset shared. “I’m grateful for the incredible support and unity shown by the community. Together, we are making a difference.”
