Miss World Japan Yui Kawana recently took part in a special event hosted by the Japan Self-Defense Forces, where she participated in a uniform fashion show organized by the Tokyo Regional Cooperation Headquarters at the Shibuya Recruitment Information Center. During the event, Kawana had the opportunity to wear and model the official women’s uniform of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), gaining firsthand insight into the responsibilities carried by members of the force.

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the land-based branch of Japan’s defense system, plays a vital role in protecting the nation’s territory and supporting national security. Beyond its defense mission, the JGSDF is widely recognized for its humanitarian contributions, particularly during natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, and floods. Its personnel frequently lead rescue and recovery operations, providing emergency assistance and rebuilding support to communities across the country.

Women have become an increasingly important part of the JGSDF. Over the past decades, opportunities for women in the force have expanded significantly, with female personnel serving in a wide range of roles, from logistics and medical services to operational and leadership positions. Their growing presence reflects Japan’s broader efforts to promote gender equality within national institutions while strengthening the effectiveness of its defense forces.

Reflecting on the experience, Kawana emphasized the symbolic weight of the uniform and the dedication of those who serve.

“When I actually put on the uniform, it felt heavier than I imagined. In that weight, I could feel the responsibility, determination, and daily efforts of the people who continue to protect the country,” she said. “I have deep respect and gratitude for all members of the Self-Defense Forces who work every day to safeguard Japan’s peace and security.”

Kawana also expressed appreciation to the Tokyo Regional Cooperation Headquarters and the Shibuya Recruitment Information Center for the opportunity, noting that the event helped raise awareness of the important role played by the Self-Defense Forces and the contributions of women serving within their ranks.

The current Miss World Japan runners-up also participated in the event.
