"Let Women Bleed with Dignity" In a country where menstruation is whispered as a sin, In a country where temples turn women away for being "unclean," In a country where pad packets are hidden like secrets, wrapped in newspaper, In a country where rags and leaves replace sanitary pads for millions, In a country where a husband’s embarrassment outweighs a wife’s need— A girl from Anuradhapura stood up and said: "Let women bleed with dignity." Anudi Gunasekara, Sri Lanka’s Miss World 2024, didn’t just wear a crown— she carried the weight of a silenced struggle. Born in a nation where 50% of women face period poverty , where 66% of girls are blindsided by their first period , and where myths call menstrual blood "impure" , she turned her platform into a revolution. Through her foundation Saheli, she fights for: Access: Distributing sanitary products to women who’ve never held a pad. Education: Shattering taboos with workshops on menstrual health . Dignity: Renovating toilets, challenging stigma, and even training tea plantation workers to sew reusable pads . When she took the Miss World stage in Hyderabad, her advocacy wasn’t just about beauty— it was about the billions of women who bleed in shame. While Sri Lanka taxes pads at 52% and teachers call periods "dirty", Anudi’s voice echoed: "This is not impurity. This is power." I don’t know if she’ll win the title. But I know this: A queen isn’t made by a sash— but by the courage to say what her country whispers. And in that, Anudi has already crowned herself. #LetWomenBleedWithDignity #PeriodPoverty #AnudiForMissWorld Akshi
